Analysis - Aurochs are an extinct form of wild ox that roamed northern Europe until sometime in the 17th century. Julius Caesar described them in De Bello Gallico as slightly less than the elephant in size and of the colour and shape of a bull. They had extraordinary strength and speed and while extremely hard to capture or kill, could provide meat for a tribe for many weeks.
Because of their great speed and strength, they were often used as a manhood challenge to prove a hunters prowess. Aurochs are the epitome of the wild animal, as opposed to the domesticated cattle represented by fehu.
The energy of this rune is raw, powerful, and distinctly masculine, in the sense that it is pure, elemental fire. The boy who has killed the aurochs has just entered manhood, and has therefore been initiated into the first level of the mysteries - the awareness that the source of life is death.
