Rune Reading: Learning Basic Rune Meanings
As with all methods of divining, the symbols involved in a rune reading have basic meanings which can be learned, but a professional Rune Reader will go way beyond the basic meanings. The rune symbols are a tool to tap into the infinite knowledge buried deep within your very soul.
There are 3 very distinct steps to learning how to do a rune reading but it is best to learn them all at the same time rather than trying to master one then the next. They include: 1) Learning the basic meaning of each rune. 2) Learning the various layouts. 3) Allowing the runes to tap into the Universal knowledge within you. Let's start with the basic meanings.
In learning the basic meanings, you will find a mundane meaning for each rune, a divinatory meaning and magical uses. No course on learning Runes could be complete without exploring all 3 levels.
There is debate within the Rune users communities of the world whether all runes should be read right side up with only one meaning, or if Merkstave or a reversed meaning should be used. I personally believe runes have a reversed meaning just like tarot cards do and have included that information here. You will have to decide for yourself if you want to include Merkstave rune in your rune reading.
Runes are divided into 3 Aettir (or groups of 8) This helps you remember their order and several authors have noted certain pairings and groupings within the order (cattle / aurochs, hagalaz / nauthiz / isa, etc.), but so far the meaning of the overall pattern has remained a mystery.
As you become attuned to the runes, the deeper knowledge they tap into will come of its own accord, the only thing you can do to speed up the process is to keep using the runes. Never miss an opportunity to do a rune reading for yourself or someone else.
If you have spent quality time getting in tuned with your runes, your rune readings will start to show deeper meanings that go beyond simply knowing the basic meaning of each rune. This is good. It is exactly what you want to have happen. Just accept the flow of information as being natural and helpful. The more you learn to trust it and expect it to happen, the more it will come.
The layouts used during a rune reading will come in a later lesson, for now, concentrate on learning the basic meaning of each rune. If need be, don't be afraid to simply memorize the meaning because as you attune to them and use them repeatedly in your readings, you will develop your own words to describe what each rune means.
